The flag of the United Arab Emirates has three equal horizontal bands of green, white, and black (from top to bottom, respectively) with a wider vertical red band on the hoist side. In the center of the white band, there is a national emblem consisting of a golden falcon with a disk in the center of its chest that depicts a desert landscape. The falcon holds a red banner with the Arabic inscription "Aفلح أبدا" which translates to "Success Forever." The green band represents the country's agricultural heritage, while the white band represents peace and neutrality. The black band represents the oil reserves of the country, and the red band symbolizes the unity of the Emirates and the sacrifice of its people to build the nation. The flag was adopted on December 2, 1971, when the country gained independence from the United Kingdom.
